On 9th May, 1915, the Dehra Dun Brigade of the Meerut Division of the Indian Corps attacked at Croix Barbée, near Richebourg-l’Avoue with the Bareilly Brigade in support and the Garhwal Brigade in reserve. The attack failed and that afternoon the 2nd Leicestershire battalion of the Garhwal Brigade moved forward to trenches at the Rue de Berceaux to relieve those battalions that had suffered many casualties in the initial attack. They were still in these forward positions on 14th May, the day on which Uri Mercer was killed, when they came under intermittent and at times heavy shell fire throughout the day resulting in them moving back to a redoubt at Lansdowne Post in the evening.
